The museum reopens on November 14th 2026
Stavanger Art Museum has been closed since 16 March 2026 due to the renovation of its roof. Soon, the museum will once again be buzzing with life.
Opening celebration and new exhibitions
14 November will be a day of celebration as the museum reopens. On the same day, the brand-new exhibition Family Office, featuring works by artist Cory Arcangel, will also open. Arcangel is from New York, but has lived in Norway for the past eleven years, ten of them here in Stavanger. This will be the first solo exhibition of Cory Arcangel’s work in Norway.
There will also be new exhibitions featuring works from the collection. Visitors can once again see much-loved works by Frida Hansen, Kitty Kielland and Lars Hertervig presented in a new way, as well as discover several works from the collection that they are unlikely to have seen before.
We are delighted to finally be able to open our doors again and welcome visitors to the café, shop and, of course, the exhibitions!
The museum had to close in March
Due to the extensive need for roof renovation, the art museum had to temporarily close on 16 March. The museum had experienced leaks in the roof, affecting both the galleries and storage areas, making this major renovation work essential.
The total cost of the roof renovation is approximately NOK 13 million. Stavanger Municipality and Rogaland County Municipality have contributed a total of around NOK 9 million. The remainder is being financed through a loan, guaranteed by the municipality and the county.
“We have worked actively for a long time to secure funding for the renovation of the roof at Stavanger Art Museum. We are therefore pleased that this important work is now being carried out, ensuring that the art museum can continue to operate effectively and responsibly in the years to come,” said Siri Aavitsland, then Chief Executive Officer of Museum Stavanger, before the work began.
Art experiences beyond the museum
Until the museum reopens, Stavanger Art Museum is offering art experiences at other locations around the city, as well as educational programmes in schools.
An overview of events and guided tours can be found on the museum’s website.
All annual passes purchased after 1 November 2025 will be extended until 30 June 2027. The extension applies only to Stavanger Art Museum and not to the other MUST venues. You are very welcome to visit all the other MUST museums while Stavanger Art Museum is closed.
