Hertervig's mysteries
A Walk Among the Old Pine Trees
How does it feel to wander in a primeval forest that existed over 150 years ago? What animals do you encounter? What sounds do you hear? Are there other people here? These are questions that children discuss when meeting Lars Hertervig's painting Old Pine Trees from 1865.
Now, the museum takes the students' questions and interpretations seriously, and invites them to a different kind of experience with the well-known painting. Based on children's wonder, we play with the idea of what might be hidden behind Hertervig's towering pine trees deep within the forests of Ryfylke. What kind of animals inhabit the marshy landscape in the foreground? Who is hiding in the enchanted treetops?
Hertervig's Secrets is a speculative and sensory art experience, where we get close to the details in Hertervig's painting and allow ourselves to further imagine. Here, it’s not just about seeing, but also about hearing and feeling the artwork in new ways. The immersive experience of wandering through a landscape that reflects Hertervig’s exceptional depictions of nature, will also provide a deeper understanding of his artistic expression.
